Born in Singapore, Trained in Australia
Kelvin was born in Singapore and describes himself as a happy go lucky child who enjoyed a great childhood. While he dreamed of becoming a doctor, academics were not his strength early on, and by age 16 he realised his grades were unlikely to get him there.
Determined to work in healthcare, Kelvin pursued a Diploma in Nursing, despite family concerns and cultural stigma around being a male nurse. During his clinical training, he discovered a strong passion for patient care and the human connection at the heart of medicine. He graduated with a Nursing Diploma with Merit and worked as a Registered Nurse in a busy tertiary hospital.
Over time, his interest in becoming a doctor was reignited through working closely with medical colleagues. After discovering graduate entry medicine overseas, Kelvin completed a postgraduate nursing degree at the University of Sydney and sat the GAMSAT three times before gaining entry to the University of Western Australia. He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in 2017 and has since made Victoria home.
GP has a special place in Kelvin’s heart
Kelvin might not have grown up with his father if it were not for their family doctor, Dr Ranjan Ramasamy, in Singapore. His father presented with a heavy sensation in his chest, which turned out to be an acute heart attack. Recognising the urgency, Dr Ramasamy told his receptionist he would be away for a while and personally drove Kelvin’s father to the emergency department.
That experience left a lasting impression. During medical school and his junior doctor years, Kelvin was fortunate to work with several inspiring general practitioners, which motivated him to pursue a career in General Practice. The COVID-19 pandemic further reinforced this calling, highlighting that hospitals are often the last place patients want to be. It affirmed Kelvin’s belief that the most meaningful care happens in the community, where patients are supported to live full and independent lives.
A day in the community, is a Win for Kelvin and his patients.
